Colombian miners work in a 150-year-old coal mine in Argelia, northwest Colombia, March 27, 2006. Sixty miners work in this 800-meter-deep mine and are a small part of the community of more than 6,000 miners in this region of Antioquia province digging in 120 precarious mines considered illegal for not meeting safety requirements. The miners, who suffer from a variety of ailments such as arthritis, skin disease and high blood pressure are paid eight dollars a day to produce an average of 20 tons of coal daily.
